REVIEW
Young Bruce Lee is based upon the memories of Robert and Phoebe Lee and is a bio/drama of the famous star who we think we know of so well... but we haven’t really seen regarding his life growing up as Lee Sai Fong (Phoenix) in a large family in nostalgic ‘60s Hong Kong.

The directors Raymond Yip and Manfred Wong take us on a journey which, thankfully, does not encroach into the territory that Rob Cohen’s Dragon: the Bruce Lee story had already touched on, the Hollywood film made some 17 years ago with Jason Scott Lee (no relation) in the leading role. Instead this film takes a more nostalgic look back to ‘40s to ‘60s Hong Kong.

The film shows how Bruce was a natural leader who became the head of his newly formed gang of friends. He was also a born entertainer and began acting at an early age when one his father’s friends put Bruce in one of his movies.

We see that Bruce did not like studying, but loved hanging out with friends and getting into fights. The movie fills us in on how and why he learned Wing Chun Kung Fu [the major basis of his subsequent fighting style] and although it is known that Bruce was Cha Cha champion in Hong Kong, we did not know how he won without a female partner. The fact is he won it with his younger brother Robert Lee as his dancing partner. The movie reveals all these things plus other gaps in Bruce’s life such as, why did he have to leave for America so quickly?

The actors, script and visual art has surpass anything seen so far in a Hong Kong movie, props and scenery brings such nostalgic memories to the viewer, especially the interior of the Lee house. Camera works is top notch, Lomo filter, works superb at moments of romance and brings so much emotions and story to the scenes, plus there is a fantastic tribute to Bruce Lee’s Way of The Dragon [watch the movie and find out how]. To conclude, if you are looking for a martial arts movie with Bruce Lee in it, you maybe a little disappointed, but if you’re looking for a Bruce Lee movie with some martial arts in it you will love it. A knock out movie for all fans of Bruce Lee.

EXTRAS
The extras on the DVD are the best ever with a cracking audio commentary by Bey Logan who pulls no punches and gives all the facts and figures about the movie. There’s a great trailer gallery, plus extensive deleted scenes and fourteen ‘making of...’ featurettes . The real icing on the cake is a Cine Asia world exclusive called Memories of the Master.
