On one hand Thor: The Dark World could be said to be all about dimensional rifts, epic battles and godly defiance, but take away the bells and whistles (and flying hammers) and its star says it's really all about family values and dynamics. As one of three brothers in real life, Chris Hemsworth admits he's not stranger to sibling rivalries...

“Neither of them have attempted to take over the universe as yet, but I think I’d have the same reaction if they did.," he jokes. "We’re competitive, as siblings are, at everything from sport, backyard cricket,  football, surfing… to who’s controlling the remote control. In this industry – not so much…  all three of us understand the frailty and the inconsistencies of the work and we help each other with auditions and always have and whatever scriots we’re working on. We’re not in direct competition anyway. It’s more of a team effort with this than anything else.”

“There’s the scene where (Thor and Loki) are in the spaceship, exiting  Asgard… and both Tom and I were pretty insistent on saying that it had to feel right… it’s gotta feel like when you’re in the backseat with two siblings…  (in real life) we couldn’t get a hundred metres down the road before the three of us were ‘Get off me, don’t touch me, no do this…’ It  certainly felt like that applied to that scene," Hemsworth continues. "A lot of  stuff you understand... what it’s like to have that love/hate thing and do anything for them but that some of the simple things annoy you.  I certainly tried to draw from the experiences I’ve been through or I can empathise with frustration towards one’s sibling..."

Chris admits that he loves the dynamic that he and Tom Hiddleston have perfected over the three films (the first Thor, the Avenges nd - now - The Dark World. It's led to them being able to bounce their performances off each other on a more instinctive level.

“Certainly there’s a shorthand that we have… this is the third film we’ve shot together now. We spent a huge chunk of our shooting time getting to know one another and we kinda pick up where we left off and developed a great friendship along the way. From the beginning we were lucky. We had a chemistry, the same kind of enthusiasm. It’s a relationship I always look forward to delving into every time…” he explains.“We’ve been talking about this all morning and I don’t know if it was ever planned to have Loki in this many films. But purely to do with EVERYTHING that Tom brought to the table in the first one and how incredible he was and the mixture of strength and villainous and mystery and vulnerability. It’s such an access point, you can immediately empathise with this misunderstood guy.  My hat goes off to Tom. He’s done SUCH an incredible job in every film and hopefully we can keep sneaking him somewhere…”

Of his own performance, Hemsworth remains critical but pragamatic, saying that each time he gets to play Thor he rediscovers some aspect to hone and explore.

“Every film I look back and think ‘Now I get it!’ and then start the next one and think ‘I don’t know what I’m doing!’ It’s nice to be able to approach a character again and  for the third time to tackle it in a different way with a different director," he notes. "You have a new bag of ideas and influences and ways to approach it. You grow up and that echoes in to whatever you’re doing. It’ nice to have a more mature Thor who is less petulant and arrogant than the ‘teenager’ he was in the first one. He understands the darker side of the throne and the responsibilities and the sacrifices. It was fun to play with… I remember (Anthony) Hopkins said something to me on the first Thor film. We walked in in our costumes – he had the eye-patch and the whole thing – and the huge set… he turned to me and said ‘No acting required here!’ (laughs).  He was right. Don’t compete with that. Make it simple. It already sells a lot of the work for you.”
