The Winter Soldier - The 'Eye' in Team...

As 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' opens across the UK, John Mosby talks battle tactics with Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Evans...

Samuel L Jackson IS Nick FuryWhile the likes of Chris Evans an Scarlett Johansson were going through the hard training needing for their fighting sequences, Samuel L. Jackson needed no lessons in looking cool. He was also more than willing to let his stuntman step in during some of the key action sequences.

“Oh, I used MY stuntman extensively! I have no issues with HIM being hurt, that’s what he’s paid to do and he loves it. He’s from a stunt family, his father was a stuntman, all of his brothers are stuntmen. Before they could eat breakfast in the morning, their a kicked them down the stairs and made them jump out of windows. My guy, works more than I do sometimes! You stand there, they throw a punch, you duck out of the way, they fight and you get up and go ‘hah!’ then run off and do the next guy!”

In fact, Jackson admits that the hardest part of the process may have been the practicalities of working with an eye-patch that immediately affected his field of vision and depth of field while he was on and off the set…

“I had to turn my head further. The one thing that I didn’t discover until the first Captain America movie – because I’d never had many lines to say before and I suddenly had dialogue,” he explains. “I would learn it the night before, but I could only see half the page when I put the patch on. So I discovered I had to learn my lines but cover one of my eyes to really absorb what was going on…”

Ask him about the ideas at the heart of the story and the conflicting ideals often personified by Fury and Steve Rogers – two men who are very honourable but have different ideas of how to achieve peace and then keep it – and there’s no doubt that Jackson admires the qualities that Evans’ role of an old-fashioned hero brings to the story.

“I look at the young people who put their lives on the line for us, so that we do have the freedom to make movie like this and tell stories like this. We DO have a volunteer army now it’s not as if people HAVE to do it and those men and women who go out there and put their lives on the line so we can do what WE do… I admire them greatly,” Jackson acknowledges.

“Steve just IS a good man. He’s a good person who doesn’t have to lean on people. He has good values and hopefully you can put him anywhere, in the Forties or in the modern day – whether it’s a period film or a grittier thriller and hopefully his qualities will still shone through…”

“It’s not going to be corny… because you’ve cast Chris Evans, right?” says co-director Anthony Russo. “ Chris is able to balance the character in a way that Joe and I have always been amazed by. He strikes the balance between someone who is self-confident and focused and he puts the emphasis on that, rather than righteousness. That’s important. We always liked the more complicated version of the character – the simple version was never that appealing to us.

Jackson and Evans will both appear in the next Avengers film, though events in The Winter Soldier may well limit Fury’s appearance (spoilers!). Evans will also return for the next Captain America movie, due for release in 2016, though his involvement beyond that will be open to negotiation.

Of course, in the meantime, you can always watch Jackson reprise his role in the most-recent SKY advert...
