‘Sicario’ sequel soldiers on with del Toro and Brolin…

Brolin joins Deadpool

Emily Blunt’s character and moral compass won’t feature in ‘Soldado’, but other members of the award-winning ‘Sicario’ cast will be back for more dark dealings on the US/Mexican border…

It was one of the best films of last year, applauded by critics and nominated for several Academy Awards… Sicario was a mood-heavy, beautifully shot, memorably sound-edited and powerful story of efforts to thwart the drug cartels on either side of the US/Mexico border. It featured Emily Blunt as Kate Macer drafted in to join an elite team of police enforcers, but who finds herself out of her depth when confronted by the different agendas of CIA agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) and shadowy operative Alejandro Gillick (Benicio del Toro). The film takes something of a left turn in the third act turning into a revenge feature, echoing the Spanish translation of the title phrase (Sicario roughly means ‘Hitman’)

It now seems there will be a second chapter to the story.

Soldado  – the title possibly referring to the Latin American for ‘soldier’ – will not feature Blunt’s character but will further explore the violent, grey area in which Graver and Gillick operate – with both veteran actors returning to the roles as the characters look at the smuggling that continues across the border fences and tunnels. The film, financed by Lionsgate and Black Label Media looks likely to begin filming later this year with industry site Deadline reporting that Stefano Sollima (Suburra, ACAB and the Italian mini-series Gomorra) is in talks to direct, taking over from the original’s Denis Villenueve.

The script will once again be penned by Taylor Sheridan (previously better known for acting roles in the likes of Sons of Anarchy, NCIS: Los Angeles and Veronica Mars)
