Rip Anton Yelchin

In tragic news, it now appears that ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Terminator: Salvation’ actor Anton Yelchin has been killed in a freak car accident in the early hours of this morning…

Early this morning news started circulating that, in the first instance, felt like another of the recent spate of cruel ‘death’ hoaxes. However, it appears that Star Trek and Terminator: Salvation star Anton Yelchin has indeed died in what can only be described as a freak car accident.

The actor, who was aged 27 and appears as Chekov is the reboot Trek movies, was reported missing by friends in the early hours of Sunday morning. The actor was later found pinned by his against his home’s mailbox. Foul play is not suspected.

Given the steepness of his drive and the fact the car’s engine was still running and in ‘neutral’, the presumption is that the car rolled out of control, crushing the actor as it came to rest.

Jenny Hauser, a spokesperson for the Los Angles Police Department spokesperson  released a statement that confirming some details of his death:

“On Sunday, June 19 at 1:10 in the morning, a fatal traffic collision occurred. It was the result of the victim’s own car rolling backwards down his steep driveway, pinning him against a brick mailbox pillar and security fence. The victim was on his way to meet his friends for rehearsal. And when he didn’t show up, his friends went to his house, where they found him deceased by his car. It appeared he had momentarily exited his car leaving it in the driveway.”
Yelchin had featured in a number of film and television roles over the years beginning with an episode of ER in 2000. He found his career breakthrough in 2006’s Alpha Dog. Later roles included the aforementioned Terminator: Salvation, The Smurfs and was also cast in Mr. Mercedes, the mini-series  adaptation of the Stpehen King novel due to be shot next year. He had been born in Russia in 1989 but immigrated to the United States with his family when still a young child.
