Monster Hit? Kong trailer shows light and darkness…

Kong Skull Island

It may not be quite what everyone envisioned when it was first announced, but Kong: Skull Island might be shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films of next year…

The first for Kong: Skull Island, glimpsed at this year’s San Diego Con whet the appetite for a film that some had first dismissed as ‘just another monster movie’. It was clearly intended to be something a little deeper and the the new trailer underlines those elements in even sharper detail.

Set in the 1970s, the film seeks to balance a very dark, Vietnam-tinged edge that looks to moral and military questions of mankind’s ability to wage war without always realising the consequences and collateral damage with an equally dark, gallows sense of humour to punctuate that story. It also helps to have the potential for some pulse-pounding action and a mountain-sized gorilla to deliver some of the heaviest blows.

Perhaps rising above those initial doubts and expectations, the film being directed by relative newcomer Jordan Vogt-Roberts in his first tent-pole title,it  boasts an all-star line-up and the combination also bolsters hope for a solid and maybe superior action outing. Tom Hiddleston, , , John Goodman and John C. Reilly are the main human names, the latter giving the best one-liners in the trailer.

Warner Bros. release the film in March 2017 putting it close to the release of Ghost in the Shell, but ahead of many of the expected summer titles – that may end up being a smart move in a competitive year…
