Deadpool dips his Wick…

Deadpool

The success of ‘Deadpool‘ guaranteed a sequel, but with original helmsman departing the project, it’s now gone to , one of the key men behind another cult success, ‘John Wick‘…

Tim Miller, who directed the first Deadpool movie, parted ways with the sequel a few weeks ago over the usual one-size-fits-all reason of ‘creative differences’. It did leave the project, greenlighted after the considerable and somewhat unexpected success of the anarchic superhero film, with a problem. Who could be brought on who would be able to handle the action, the drama and also the irreverent humour.

Industry site Deadline reports that David Leitch has now taken on the job. Leitch has worked as a stuntman / action coordinator for many well known action outings over the years, such as Jupiter Ascending, The Bourne Legacy, Hitman: Agent 47, X-Men: Origins – Wolverine, Conan the Barbarian, Serenity and Daredevil. He was also Second Unit Director on Captain America: . But it was his work on , which starred and for which Leitch worked closely with the official director Chad Stahelski, that got major attention. He may not have received an official credit for directing, but the film’s success is generally considered to have been as a result of the close working partnership with Stahelski.

There were several other names linked to the project, but it was felt that Leitch was the best fit. There has been talk that , who championed the project from the beginning, was wanting to keep the sequel in a similar vein: an adult-rated, anti-establishment project made on a relatively low budget. It appears the studio wants something a bit ‘bigger’ but a compromise may be reached to suit all parties and Leitch is seen as part of that.
