Steven S. DeKnight has always been an in-demand talent. He worked with Joss Whedon as a writer, director and producer on the likes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Dollhouse and went on to serve as an executive producer on shows such as Smallville. Most recently he created the epic Starz show Spartacus and was the show-runner on the first season of the much-acclaimed Daredevil, the highly-acclaimed Marvel/Netflix project which will return for a second run in March.
DeKnight had already moved on from Daredevil (Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez are taking over for the second with the show’s creator Drew Goddard serving as consultant) and was considering a wide-range of possibilities as his next project. It looks as if the one taking priority will now be Legendary Films‘ Pacific Rim 2, seeing DeKnight stepping in as a big screen feature-film director for the first time. The film, a follow-up to the visually-spectacular 2013 film from Guillermo del Toro, has a script written by Jon Spaihts (the controversial Alien ‘prequel’ Prometheus) and will continue the story of the giant human-manned robots protecting the planet. It isn’t known if the sequel will return to the idea of a threat coming from ‘inner-space’ or will find a new threat for humanity and its elite pilots to face. It is known that Universal plan to release the sequel in 3D format once more.
DeKnight is much in demand and many wondered what his next tv project would be. Though he hadn’t announced any future plans until now, it will be interesting to see if he will continue with any TV plans in the longer term or if they will move to other opportunities.
