CM: Bruce Willis - The Die(Hard) is cast?

Written by (Editor) on 1st October 2013

Bruce Willis seemed bored while publicising his 2013 movies. Time to get back into the groove or just choose better movies says John Mosby...

John Mosby Critical Mass Column 1A short while ago, you couldn’t move for images and column inches about Bruce Willis. Which was ironic because Bruce Willis wasn’t doing much, or to be more accurate wasn’t doing anything more than he was apparently contractually obliged to do to promote RED 2. And arguably less.

One might argue that it could be because he simply didn’t like the film – RED 2 was hardly Shakespeare but it was no lighter fare than many a past summer filler release and compared to the likes of A Good Day to Die Hard and GI Joe Retaliation you could almost hear Yorick himself reciting lines. So it was somewhat surprising that Willis wasn’t stepping up to the plate. Yes, he was there in body, but the spirit was definitely weak. On the London press boat where I asked him about franchise film-making he gave a polite answer but seemed largely disengaged from proceedings Later the same day he would talk on camera to radio station Magic 105.4 and be positively rude and snarky to the interviewer who clearly didn’t deserve it. That video went viral (judge for yourselves here) but it’s unlikely it did the film or Willis much good...

Some put it down to the unusually hot weather the country was experiencing and old-fashioned killer jet-lag - celebrities aren’t always comfortable at junkets to begin with and the conditions would hardly have made it any more comfortable. But the likes of Helen Mirren handled the situation with aplomb and later another interview surfaced in Spain where Bruce appeared to admit that while he was a fan of the money that such blockbusters bring in, he was getting weary of the genre itself. A dodgy translation or a confession that backs up his recent apparent outlook?
