CBS ‘Magyvers’ its reboots, moves Supergirl to CW…

CBS new schedules

Network shake-ups continue with CBS letting ‘Supergirl’ fly elsewhere and green-lighting some noticeable reboots…

On Thursday, CBS announced that they would not be running a second season of Supergirl, though it seems the show’s future is brighter with a transfer to sister network The CW, already home to the likes of The Flash (with which it crossed over last month), Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow – many seeing this as a far better fit for the target demographic and potential audience- though it’s not known if they will find a way to integrate the series into continuity (the crossover was a one-off multiverse event).

CBS has given the greenlight to a number of new shows for which it had produced pilots…

Training Day… we’d previously reported on the project, a sequel to the movie of the same name that looked at the partnership between a rookie cop and his compromised mentor. It originally starred Ethan Hawke and Denzel Washington. The series – which will a sequel not a full reboot will take place fifteen years after those events and will see the racial dynamic change with Justin Cornwell as the recruit and Bill Paxton as the corrupt cop. Other cast members include Drew Van Acker, Katrina Law, Lex Scott Davis, Julie Benz (Angel, Dexter).

Magyver… is the reboot of the  classic tv action show that helped launch Richard Dean Anderson’s career. Though the network was happy enough with the pilot – starring Lucas Till (X-Men: Apocalypse) in the title role and CSI’s George Eads as his friend – it seems the changes of writer and director during its development caused some problems and they want some major changes –  the supporting cast looking likely to be replaced or recast.  Industry site Deadline reports that the changes may see the show being considered as a mid-season replacement rather than starting in September like many of its counterparts.

Bull… is actually a drama inspired by the early career of ‘Dr Phil’ the tv medical pundit and sees a brash but charismatic trial-consultant using his talents to influence the picking of juries for key cases. What puts the show firmly on the primetime radar is the fact that ‘Dr Bull’ will be the first role for Michael Weatherly who exits NCIS next week. Weatherly played Tony DiNozzo throughout the NCIS run, proving to be one of the most popular characters in the tv show – a series that in itself is currently the most watched primetime drama in the world.  Bull also features an ensemble cast including Freddy Rodriguez, Geneva Carr, Chris Jackson, Jaime Lee Kirchner and Annabelle Attanasio.

Pure Genius… was formerly known as ‘Bunker Hill’ and has been reworked from its initial 2015/2016 season pitch. It sees a Silicon Valey billionnaire enlist a veteran surgeon in a radical plan to revolutionise the approach to medicine at a new hospital. It stars Augustus Prew, Dermot Mulroney, Brenda Song, Reshma Shetty, Ward Horton, Aaron Jennings and Odette Annable.
