SDCC - Warner Bros. Posters

There’s lots of news is coming out of SDCC. Here we look at the poster roster for forthcoming major action releases from Warner Bros, for whom it’ll be quite a busy 2017…

Wonder Woman posterThe DC/Warner universe has had some major criticism for its nihilistic tone so far (The Man of Steel and Batman Vs Superman:Dawn of Justice being much darker and gloomy than many expected or wanted).

The next entry on the schedule is Wonder Woman – whom we’ve already seen in a supporting role in DoJ. But her long-awaited solo-effort, with Gal Gadot back in the titular role, debuts next year and the San Diego Comic Con saw the debut of a new poster image.  It’s certainly a beautiful and iconic piece of artwork, though one might rightly point out that while male-led action outings usually guarantee the main performer’s face as the focal point of marketing, Gadot’s face has been moved partly out of frame in favour of focusing on that famous cleavage and bustier.

The film, directed by Patty Jenkins, also stars Chris Pine (currently on screen in the latest Star Trek film) as Steve Trevor, Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen as fellow Amazon warriors from Paradise Island along with Ewen Bremner, David Thewlis, Lucy Davis, Danny Huston, Said Taghmaoui and Mayling Ng.

It is essentially a prequel and origin story set during the days of World War I when pilot Steve Trevor crash-lands on our heroine’s secluded island and kick-starts a chain of events that will lead to ‘Diana Prince’ exploring the world beyond her shores…

Wonder Woman debuts on 2nd June 2017.

Kong Skull Island posterThe last King Kong movie was quite a controversial affair. There’s no doubt that Peter Jackson brought scope to the 2005 outing, which featured Jack Black, Naomi Watts and more performance-capture from Andy Serkis. But there was a mixed reaction with many noting the look of the film was very impressive but that the internal logic didn’t hold up. Over a decade later and Kong: Skull Island could face just as many obstacles, but does boast some equally impressive star power. Man of the moment (and possible future Bond) Tom Hiddleston appears alongside the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, John C. Reilly, Toby Kebbell and recent Oscar-winner Brie Larson in a story that appears to focus more on the island home of the mythical cinematic beast than on any aerodynamics atop the Empire State Building.

It’s also a film, directed by the up-and-coming Jordan Vogt Roberts, that is said to boast the biggest version of giant gorilla ‘Kong’ to date. The new poster that debuted at the SDCC, emphasises that scale, making the title creature a shadowy but massive presence (one you’ll have to look closely to see in detail) – one that, again, will likely be a key to whether the film swings or plummets.

It’s interesting to note that unlike many previous efforts, the film will be set in the 1970s, featuring a range of characters dealing with the issues of the time-  such as Vietnam. Apparently it will also do away with the ‘beauty and the beast’ story angle that has always played a major part in the Kong mythology.

The film debuts 10th March next year, making it one of the earliest of the 2017 salvo of titles.

The Lego Batman MovieThe next Batman movie (if you don’t count his in-universe appearance in Suicide Squad) will actually be a very different version of the Dark Knight. It is, of course, The Lego Batman Movie, the latest spin-off from the successful brick-based outing of 2014. In The Lego Movie, Batman was one of a myriad of diverse characters, but this time he takes centre-stage for a humorous take on the mythology of Gotham’s Caped Crusader.

Returning to voice the character of Batman / Bruce Wayne is Will Arnett and the rest of the cast includes names such as Ralph Fiennes (as Alfred), Daredevil‘s Rosario Dawson (as Barbara Gordon / Batgirl), Michael Cera as Dick Grayson / Robin) and Zach Galifianakis (as The Joker).

The new poster reflects the simplistic but fun nature of the film and, if we’re being honest, we have to note that ‘Bruce’ shares Wonder Woman‘s fate of having only part of his face visible on the poster image. This could be one of the earliest sleeper hits of 2017 when it is released on 10th February.
