BBC announces 3D Doctor Who and 'Atlantis'

The BBC has announced some major drama plans for the next twelve months - including a 3D anniversary episode of Doctor Who...

Though several key BBC projects HAVE been publicised well in advance, it has appeared that the corporation wasn't in any rush to reveal its full plans for Doctor Who. Quotes from Steven Moffat's appearance as a recent BFI screening would seem to finally confirm that there will be a Christmas episode as normal in 2013 and this will be separate from the 50th Anniversary special.

But news has been announced today that the anniversary special will be made and broadcast in 3D format.

The BBC's Controller of Drama, Ben Stephenson, said he was "...applying the Danny Boyle vision to our work - a bold, adventurous, authorial approach that exports because of its Britishness not despite it."

Stevan Moffat added in a statement that it would bring a "...whole new dimension of adventure for the Doctor to explore".

It is not known how the technlogy will be viewed by fans on broadcast or if, as in the wacky days of the Eastenders/Doctor Who team-up for Children in Need so many years ago, viewers will need the old-fashioned red/green glasses (similar to those favoured by Tennant's Tenth Doctor).

The remaining episodes of Season 'Seven' will commence on March 30th. It is still not known if the episodic adventures of Doctor Who will continue with part of an 'eighth' season pre-Christmas or whether the 2103 celebrations will only consist of eight episodes, the anniversary and the Christmas specials - and a connected docu-drama about the original creation of the show.

The BBC also announced a new fantasy drama 'Atlantis' designed to fill the vacant Saturday night spot left by the end of Merlin. It will be penned by Merlin series creator Howard Overman, and looks set to begin in the Autumn after filming in Wales and Morocco in April. The series appears to involve some of the classic ancinet greek legends and fables such as snake-haired goddesses and valiant heroes. Somewhat surprisngly, unlike international hit Doctor Who, newcomer Atlantis has managed a thirteen episode commitment in 2013...
