We already knew that Doctor Who was returning for the final eight episodes of its current season in time for Easter on March 30th on BBC1. Though it was already suspected that the episode would be called The Bells of St.John, the title was only officially confirmed at midnight. Along with the information is a new image, showng The Doctor (Matt Smith) and Clara (Jenna Louise Coleman) astride a motorbike and a backdrop of London landmarks.
However, sharp-eyed fans will also note something else - alongside an image of a cyberman is the first official visual confirmation (in one of the shards of glass) that the Ice Warriors will be returning to the series and looking very similar to the incarnation that originally challenged Patrick Troughton's tenure.
"It's the 50th year of Doctor Who and look what's going on! We're up in the sky and under the sea! We're running round the rings of an alien world and then a haunted house. There's new Cybermen, new Ice Warriors and a never before attempted journey to the centre of the TARDIS. And in the finale, the Doctor's greatest secret will at last be revealed! If this wasn't already our most exciting year it would be anyway!" says show-runner Steven Moffat.
We're still not 100% sure on the anniversary plans for the series beyond an anniversary episode (60 minutes), the drama-documentary about the show's origins and the traditional Christmas special. There are rumours that some famous 'companions' may yet return for the celebrations, but nothing ahs been confirmed. Filming for the anniversary special begins in a few months, so more news will be forthcoming then...
