‘Game’ takes Emmy ‘Throne’… but no prequels (yet).

Game of Thrones Smashes Emmy Record

‘Game of Thrones’ took some impressive wins at an award ceremony with quite a few surprises. But author has said there won’t be a prequel series any time soon…

The HBO sensation that is Game of Thrones continued its TV domination at the 2016 Emmy Awards on Sunday, as the show picked up another 12 awards making it the record holder for the highest number of Primetime Emmy Awards won by a scripted show with 38, overtaking the previous holder Frasier’s 37.

Game of Thrones picked up the coveted award for Best Drama Series and went on to achieve many more for the show as a whole, however the nominated actors and actresses such as Kit Harrington (Jon Snow), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) and Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) all missed out on individual gongs. But  they can’t win everything now can they?

Writers David Benihoff and DB Weiss picked up an award for best drama writing, while Miguel Sapotchnik was also successful for his directing on the show, with the epic Season Six episode ‘Battle of the Bastards’ which saw the final showdown between Ramsay Bolton and Jon Snow receiving most of the plaudits. Downtown Abbey (in the shape of Smith) also took down a Game of Thrones trio to Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

Elsewhere on the night, The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story was successful and picked up an impressive five different awards and Julia Louis-Dreyfus picked up an award in the comedy acting category (for Veep) for an outstanding fifth year in a row.  Outsiders such as Rami Malek for Mr Robot and Tatiana Maslany for Orphan Black had surprise wins, proving that cult shows are now firmly making their mark.

With two more seasons of Game of Thrones in the pipeline it’s astonishing to think how many Emmys the show may pick up before it comes to an end, but one thing for certain is that it is going to be a pretty high total of awards should anyone wish to break the record in the future that the show broke this year.

However author George R R Martin DID shoot down one popular rumour doing the rounds- that Game of Thrones‘ finite life might soon be extended by a prequel series. Noting the already busy workload, he told industry site Deadline that: “I do have thousands of pages of fake history of everything that led up to Game of Thrones, so there’s a lot of material there and I’m writing more. At the moment we still have this show to finish and I still have two to finish so that’s all speculation…”
