Mars Attacks... 'Goliath' heads to London at last!

Written by (Editor) on 18th April 2013

The chances of anything coming from Mars are... very good. War of the Worlds: Goliath heads to the UK for a premiere at Sci-Fi London...

Long time Impact readers will know that we've been supportive of (and excited about) the much-anticipated War of the Worlds: Goliath film...a major animated sci-fi thriller combining the best anime artists with some very familiar voice-talent, the penmanship of tv veteran David Abramowitz and the themes of the classic science-fiction outing.

The story tells the tale of an alternate history, where mankind looked at the machines left behind after the first, unsuccessful Martian invasion in 1899 and took full advantage of them, making huge advances in technology. But though it means that the early years of the Twentieth Century saw some major changes to what we know, it didn't mean the end of the threats from beyond out world, nor from factions within our own. As the stakes get higher, new alliances are formed as well as old rivalries reignited...

Fifteen years after the onslaught and now equipped with giant, steam-powered Tripod battle machines, the international rapid reaction force, A.R.E.S., is Mankind’s first line of defense against the return of the Martian invaders. Based in a massive fortress complex at the south end of Manhattan Island, the young warriors of A.R.E.S. train under the leadership of Secretary of War, Theodore Roosevelt, and the grim General Kushnirov.  As the Martians return the battle Tripod "Goliath" is ready on the front-lines of a vicious interplanetary offensive. The young team helming the mighty Goliath will be tested to the limits of their endurance and courage as they fight for Mankind's very survival under the onslaught of an implacable enemy.

The voices behind the main characters will be familiar to genre fans, especially those who loved the Highlander series. Peter Wingfield, Adrian Paul, Jim Byrnes and Elizabeth Gracen take key roles in the outing penned by their show-runner David Abramowitz from the idea by Joe Pearson and are joined by the likes of Stargate SG1 and Sanctuary's Amanda Tapping, prolific genre legends Mark Sheppard and Adam Baldwin and Cowboy Bebop's Beau Billingslea.

With its mixture of science-fiction, bi-planes and derring-do, the film has so far got rave reviews (and awards) at various festivals and film-markets, but due to the pragmatic nature of getting the 3D format screened at global locations, it hasn't really had major public screenings outside of the US locations (LA, San Diego Comic Con etc), the Brussels and Stiges festivals and Malaysia (where a lot of the animation talent resides).  Given that the city decimated at the start of the film is the Yorkshire city of Leeds, the film-makers had told us before that they were anxious to try and get a UK screening at some point - ahead of a more formal release, but until now the stars had not quite aligned.

But it WAS was only a matter of time before the Martians decided to vent their anger and heat-rays on the British public once more and after some intense and specific scheduling and planning, it means that 'Goliath...' is finally going to get its official British premiere in its full-on 3D format...as part of the big Sci-iFi-London which runs from 30th April to the 6th May. The premiere itself takes place on 4th May with a subsequent screening overnight on the 4th/5th as part of a special all-night anime marathon).
