In the world of cult cinema and the horror genre, one of the 'unholy grails' is probably the return of of Bruce Campbell to the role of 'Ash' the character he made famous in the Evil Dead franchise. Though the original was remade for a new generation last year, such is Campbell's cult status that he ended up making a brief one-word post-credits cameo that had little do with the film to which it was attached.
Now, according to various reports, it looks as if fans might finally get what they've been craving for so long - a proper return of chainsaw-weilding, wide-eyed Ashley Williams. Sam Raimi had spoken earlier in the year of possibly prepping a sequel to the 1992 outing Army of Darkness (the third in the series) with plans that potentially may also include further projects that somehow join up the world of the original and the 2012 reboot. Speaking at the Wizard World Nashville Comic Con Campbell appears to have announced he's now onboard with the project, at least in spirit...
"The last one was twenty-two years ago. I just haven’t been racing to do it. Sam Raimi is just a little bit busy making the biggest movies in Hollywood. I use to be busy. Now I’m not. That’s why I’m here. . ." he apparently told an audience at the event. " Ash would have to stop occasionally from chasing some deadite to catch his breath. Maybe we could do that, I guess. That would be exciting. Fight in a walker. That would be alright. Hit them with my cane! Fake them out! Have a fake heart attack, distract a zombie. I like it. . . Alright sir, the answer is yes!"
While that might not be an air-tight contract, it does seem that the stars are aligning more favourably and that we might see 'Army of Darkness 2' sooner rather than later. However given the previous Army of Darkness had two different endings, it will be interesting how Raimi, Campbell and co. START this project, never mind finish it!
But either way: "Hail to the King, baby!"
