Independence Date-Change to 2016...

Written by (Editor) on 13th November 2013

In Pacific Rim we're told 'the apocalypse has been cancelled...' For Independence Day 2, it's simply been postponed... but by a full year...

Independence Day DelayedIt might just be the most savvy decision made in the recent scheduling of major movies. With 2015 looking as tightly-packed as a VERY tightly-packed thing, tens of blockbusters jostling for space and cover, the decision has been made to move Independence Day 2 away from its July 3rd 2015 opening. In fact, to ensure the topicality of the film, it will now be released  almost exactly a YEAR LATER than planned on July 1st 2016. This will mean that the sequel to the sci-fi hit (which originally starred Will Smith, Bill Pulman and Jeff Goldblum) will arrive on screens twenty years after the original.

Little is known about the plot of the film (even the title could be a twist on the technically misleading ID4 moniker with which the original was marketed... ID42 perhaps?) or whether any of the original stars will be back - though it is believed that the film will go for an 'ensemble' cast. There have been rumours of Smith and Goldblum specifically being discussed to reprise their roles, though it is far from certain if either of those, if agreed, would be central roles or any more than a cameo. In the original film many international landmarks were destroyed (most famously the White House and New York), so the question might well be how they will seek to top that visual display.

Roland Emmerich, well known for steering  ambitious and large-scale disaster movies (his work includes the likes of the original Stargate, Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow and 2012) and will once again step in to helm the film for Twentieth Century Fox
