It was noted recently that DC seem to be having more trouble bringing an Amazonian warrior to the screen than Marvel has had creating a walking talking superhero racoon. That might be a bit harsh (though we are looking forward to said creature in Guardians of the Galaxy) but it's not wholly inaccurate to say that Wonder Woman has had a particularly problematic time to date. No less than Joss Whedon spent a great deal of time on trying to get a script with which the Powers-That-Be would be happy... before giving up that ghost and moving across to Marvel's Avengers and an attempted television pilot (by David E. Kelley) never made it past unaired pilot stage.
However, drum-roll and a whirl of a goldern lasso, please, with the announcement hitting industry sites such as The Hollywood Reporter, that the 2015 Superman/Batman movie will also boast Wonder Woman and the actress who has been cast in the role is Gal Gadot.
Given that the names in the movie- frame over the years have been as diverse as Gina Carano, Olga Kurylenko, Cobie Smulders, Elodie Yung, Charisma Carpenter and Adrianne Palicki (the latter taking the role in the aborted series), then one might be forgiven for not instantly recognising the name. Gadot's biggest credit to date is the Fast & Furious franchise in the role of Gisele, though she has also appeared in Entourage, Knight & Day and Date Night.
“Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe," said director Zack Snyder in a statement. "Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character,"
The sequel to Man of Steel has rapidly become something of an even bigger project, echoing eprhaps a past idea of a 'World's Finest' concept with DC's trinity of iconic heroes. With news that Doomsday (the comic character that (on a temporary basis, at least) killed off Superman, one wonders just how large a canvas Snyder and Co. will need.
