Proving that the remake industry is alive and strong and not looking THAT far into the past for inspiration, Justin Lin - director of many of the Fast & Furious movies - will be one of a number of high-ranking directors heading to China - his next project: a remake of the 1982 film The Shaolin Temple, which was then an early vehicle for a young Jet Li.
Industry site Deadline reports that the project was just announced at a major press conference in beijing and that Troy Craig Poon, Lin's business partner is saying the project is still in early development - with no stars or script-writer formally attached as yet and a start-date yet to be finalised. However there is early talk of a high budget of over $100 million with the aim of making it a major international blockbuster - though likely to be filmed first in Mandarin with a possible English-language version to be released as well. Long-time Impact and jet-Li fans will remember that the original tale was a reworking of the folklore story in which a lowly slave escapes a temple to train in kung fu in an effort to kill the general who betrayed the tang emperor.
Lin' has become a sort-after director in recent years. In addition to the four Fast & Furious films he made, he was also briefly attached to a Highlander remake as director (he may remain a producer) and he will be helming the next Bourne movie (out in 2014)
