The latest incarnation of Nikita may have finished its run, but its star Maggie Q is ready for another mission. She will soon be appearing the adaptation of the latest 'young adult novel' film trilogy Divergent but then she'll be taking to the ocean... In the wake of the success of pirate drama Black Sails, a different coloured flag is about to be raised...
According to industry site Deadline, her next role will be in the mini-series Red Flag and sees her take on Ching Shih, a prostitute who became one of China's most prominent and feared pirates and then the head of a massive crime syndicate with enough ships and sailors to control most of the South China Sea and take on entire nations' fleets in the early 1800s. With this unbeatable navy she put together over the years, the Chinese government was oforced to offer an amnesty to pirates in return for their co-operation and she was also one of the few pirates to actively retire her 'profession' rather than being slain during various previous confrontations with authorities.
In a statement, Maggie Q said: “It’s exciting to have the opportunity to share Ching Shih’s real-life story with audiences that are both familiar and unfamiliar with her prominent history”.
Filming will begin later this year.
