There's been a lot of differing opinions about Godzilla, released in the UK last week and now opening across the UK. Some have loved it and some have hated it - we at Impact certainly had our disappointments with the result.
However the film's US opening often dictates whether a film plummets or soars and there's no denying that a curious audience defied all the critics and have turned out in bigger-than-expected numbers across America. With a US domestic take of $98million - the biggest of the year - and a combined $103 internationally it may not be surprising that industry-site Deadline is rpeorting that Legendary Pictures are ready to start moving forward on a sequel. It isn't known what the story might involve but as a lot of the specific history of the titular beast was left rather vague in the film, there's certainly a lot of material left to cover.
During publicity for the film's premiere last week, director Gareth Edwards - who is suspected to be at the helm once more - told us:
"I sat down with Thomas (Tull, Producer) the other night and had a meal and we were just celebrating the end of the movie and the start of all this publicity. Inevitably as you’re chatting you think about the ‘sequel’ and whether you should talk about it. We both decided not to jinx it and said ‘Let’s let it play out and see how people respond…’ If it all goes well, May 17th we’ll have another meal and try and figure it out…"
It looks as if that meal went well.
