Truth or Dare. A second Marvel exit...

Written by (Editor) on 24th May 2014

Yesterday Marvel lost a high-profile director. Today brought the rumours of MORE bad news for their expanding universe... this time for 'Daredevil'...

UPDATED:

Losing one primary mover-and-shaker could be deemed unfortunate. Losing two in as many days might be seen as careless. Less than twenty-four hours after Edgar Wright left Marvel's Ant-Man project (with a terse Marvel statement claiming it was amicable, but there being many rumours that major changes had been made to the script that Wright was not happy with), comes the news via internet-site latino-review.com that  director/executive-producer Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods, LOST, Alias), who was steering Marvel's Daredevil series for Netflix has now left that project.

At this juncture, there is nothing official being said on the precise reasons for Goddard's departure and nothing to suggest that the two resignations/departures are in any way directly connected, but the timing of the two high-profile departures cannot make this a great holiday weekend for Marvel who have, until recently, been seen to have something of a solid campaign and strategy.

Marvel have had to move quickly to replace their departing talent as the series was due to start filming in New York soon for its 2015 debut.  It appears that Steven DeKnight will be stepping into Goddard's shoes. Most recently DeKnight was the showrunner on three seasons of Starz's Spartacus and worked with Goddard on Mutant Enemy shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel (as well as Dollhouse and Smallville).

Goddard is still in line to direct the Spider-man movie spin-off The Sinister Six for rival studio Sony.

Joss Whedon has posted an image of himself holding a Cornetto which appears to suggest some solidarity with Edgar Wright (who made the famous 'Three Colours Cornetto Trilogy' consisting of  Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and World's End).

One wonders if Whedon will now be seen with a billy-club to mark Goddard's departure?

Later news appears to claim that the handover had been planned some months ago when Goddard was given the Sinister Six job, but only announced now - which is still strange timing given the turbulent events of the last twenty-four hours and the initial  'speculation' that was instigated without any immediate clarification.

The official Marvel response came later in the day with the following:

Marvel is proud to announce that acclaimed writer, director and producer Steven S. DeKnight ("Spartacus," "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer," "Angel") has joined "Marvel's Daredevil" as Executive Producer & Showrunner on the all-new 13-episode series premiering on Netflix in 2015. Drew Goddard, who also wrote the first two episodes, will continue to serve as Executive Producer on "Marvel"s Daredevil" as he writes and preps Sony's "The Amazing Spider-Man" spin-off film, "The Sinister Six."
