Expendables put tigers in (and on) the tank...

Yes, we Cannes.... the main cast of 'The Expendables 3' put on quite a show when they drove a tank into the heart of the famous film festival...

Expendables in CannesThe Cannes Film Festival has drawn to a close for 2014 and for this year's event there was the usual mix of big-budget products, big names and gala presentations as well as the smaller shoestring outings hoping for distribution. There was also a tank.  And if an armoured vehicle heading down the Croisette wasn't already quite enough to impress, perched on top of it was a veritable Who's Who of the action genre from the last three decades. Yes, side-by-side in an ensemble that a decade ago would have cost a studio the gross-domestic-product of small European country to get together, was a group that included the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas, Wesley Snipes, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Jet Li.

As you might expect, this was a subtle promotion for The Expendables 3.  The latest chapter reunites many of the familiar faces from the first two outings - minus Bruce Willis - and pits them against new bad-guy Mel Gibson.

Expendables - CannesBarney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables -- but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.

The cast joked around on the seafront and also took part in a major press conference for the film. All of them noted that while they are getting older, they still have a lot of fun making their movies...

"Let me tell you: we are children with arthritis,” Stallone joked and when asked how he'd know when it was time to hang up his action spurs, he replied. “You wake up in the morning and your ass falls off. Then you know.”

The Expendables is released by Lionsgate UK and opens in the UK on the 14th August...
