Dustin Nguyen: Loving 'Angels' instead?

Written by (Far Eastern Editor) on 28th May 2014

Some of Dustin Nguyen's projects seem to be in Development Hell, but 'Zero Tolerance' looks like it might be taking the 'Angelic' route...

Zero ToleranceWe’re big fans of Dustin Nguyen and it’s been great to see his projects like The Rebel and Once Upon A Time in Vietnam putting Vietnamese action cinema on the map... and we’re looking forward to seeing him in action in the recently wrapped Man with the Iron Fists 2. But there’s a couple of projects of his that seem to have vanished without trace. His Vietnamese 'Forrest Gump meets Bruce Lee' project The Legend is Alive was given a Vietnamese release but never an international one and his thriller Angels (which was directed by Wych Kaosayananda a few years ago) seemed to vanish too after a first trailer popped up online and the film only received a limited Vietnamese release.

Now we hear of a new project called Zero Tolerence which appears to be a new version of Angels with some additional scenes and some high profile guest stars including Scott Adkins and Kane Kosugi added to the original in a chop and paste that brings to mind the heady bygone days of IFD Films and Arts. We’re half hoping for a Richard Harrison appearance ideally talking on a Garfield phone. The premise for the film always intrigued us, it’s a solid cast and the addition of Adkins and Kosugi to the cast does adds to our enthusiasm for the project, so here’s hoping.

The premise?  Bangkok, Thailand. The body of a naked and bound young woman (Angel) is discovered on the Chao Praya river. A senior Royal Thai Police Department detective arrives on the scene and is horrified to discover that the victim is the daughter of one of his oldest friends, Johnny – a man whose friendship goes back to earlier days when both were CIA surrogates. A man who will stop at nothing to make whoever is responsible pay!
