Black & Dekker drill for 'Predator'...

25th June 2014

Drill, baby, drill. The 'Predator' franchise looks set to be getting a new mission-statement courtesy of (Shane) Black and (Fred) Dekker...

Preadtor gets rebooted by Shane BlackThat hardly seems an 80s' 'property' that isn't in some process of being remade or rebooted. Now comes news that classic Schwarzenegger outing Predator is on the cards at 20th Century Fox.

The original 1987 film is often cited as one of the best Schwarzenegger movies and told the tale of a group of mercenaries  - including co-stars Bill Duke, Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura and an upcoming actor/screenwriter called Shane Black (who had already penned Lethal Weapon and whom the studio wanted to take a swing at polishing their script) as 'Hawkins' - being hunted through the South American jungle by an invisible, extraterrestrial foe. A 1990 sequel, imaginatively entitled 'Predator 2', with Danny Glover in the main hero role, transposed the action to an urban setting with the likes of Gary Busey, Adam Baldwin, Bill Paxton and Ruben Blades.  In 2010, director Nimród Antal and producer Robert Rodriguez took the action off-world for 'Preadtors' with an ensemble including Adrian Brody, Laurence Fishburne, Walton Goggins, Topher Grace, Danny Trejo and Alice Braga. There were also two Alien Vs. Predator movies in 2004 (directed by Paul W S Anderson and 2007's AvP: Requiem directed by 'The Brothers Strause').

The new film, expected to be a thematic reboot - but which will be a sequel of sorts (so as not to waste the "rich mythology"), will be directed by that now even more-credited writer and director Shane Black ( who went on to direct Iron Man 3 and Kiss-Kiss-Bang-Bang). Industry site The Hollywood Reporter says that Black will be writing the initial version of the reboot treatment which will then go to Fred Dekker (RoboCop 3's director) to pen the finished script.

During publicity for Iron Man 3, Black indicated he was interested in returning Doc Savage to the screen and that is still a passion project he hopes to pursue. It is not clear which project would be first on Black's slate.
