Hey, Hey, it's the Monkey King's Daughter...

'The Monkey King' had a controversial release around Chinese New Year... will the proposed 'The Monkey King's Daughter' adaptation fare better..?

Monkey King's DaughterThe biggest box office hit of last year's Chinese New Year was the much delayed Monkey King movie starring Donnie Yen, Chow Yun-fatt, Aaron Kwok etc and directed by Soi Cheang. After a lengthy and apparently less-than-smooth production, the film was released in time for Lunar New Year and despite seeming to be an unfinished movie (several scenes featured disappointing and at times visibly unfinished SFX sequences) the film was a huge hit across China. For its upcoming international release, additional SFX work has been done to give the film a more polished look! While the same team has been working on a sequel, featuring Aaron Kwok as the Monkey King, this year's Cannes Film Festival and Market has seen the announcement of a new Monkey King project.

ANAMedia is joining fores with LV Jianmen's Chunqiu Time Culture Company (that recently scored a massive China box office success with Wu Jing's Wolf Warrior) for The Monkey King's Daughter, which - while using the Chinese legend as a starting point - is based upon the series of books written by Too A DeBonis (who is also writing the screenplay for the movie). Red Sea Media will be handling the films International Sales, but no director or cast have been announced as yet.

The Monkey King's Daughter, follows Meilin, a California High School student who knows and cares nothing for her father's true Chinese heritage. But on her sixteenth birthday, her genetic make up jumps into gear, transforming her into an extraordinary super-heroine and throwing her into the magical realms of the past to battle monstrous demons from ancient China. With the help of her father, the Monkey King , she must save her mother and friends from certain death.

The film is scheduled to start shooting at the end of 2015 in locations in Canada and China, with veteran actor and producer Aki Aleong CEO of Mustard Seed Media Group as Executive Producer and Henry Luk's ACE Studios in China providing production services.
