You may be well aware that there's a new Batman film on the horizon, one The Dark Knight Rises. It is not, however, the only Batman project being planned. Warner Bros. is well underway with plans for another Baman outing, this being an animated version of the now legendary The Dark Knight Returns. TDKR is largely considered to be one of the comic industry milestones, written and illustrated by Frank Miller and first published in the 1980s. It portrayed a grim future where an elderly Batman comes out of retirement to defend his city one final time. Along with Watchmen (another DC release) it ushered in an era where the mainstream public began to realise that comics were not beign solely aimed at kids anymore...
The animated version, aimed for the DVD market rather than the cinema screen, will feature Peter Weller (RoboCop) as the voice of Bruce Wayne/Batman and Modern Family's Ariel Winter will take the role of the new Robin. Wade Williams (Prison Break) will be Harvey Dent and Michael McKean will play Doctor Wolper. It is not certain at this point who will play the voice of the Joker.
The plan, according to industry paper The Hollywood Reporter, is to take the four-issue original version and split it into two releases, one appearing towards the end of this year and the second in early 2013. It is the latest in the DC initiative to adapt key stories from its library and will appear under the DC Comics Premiere Movies branding...
