The original RoboCop, directed by Paul Verhoeven, was a landmark action film, released in 1987 and matching all out politically-incorrect action with a satire baout modern consumerism. Peter Weller took the starring role as Officer Murphy, cut-down in his prime but reassembled as the prototype protector and slowly rediscovering his humanity. Weller returned for a sequel but Robert John Burke took the role for the third.
The re-imagining, due to start shooting in the late summer for a 2013 release is now moving ahead at speed. Relative unknown Joel Kinnaman takes the title role for the film, but there's an A-List supporting cast being assembled. The first announced was Gary Oldman, soon to be reprising his role as James Gordon in Christopher Nolan's final Batman outing, The Dark Knight Rises. It i beleived Oldman's role will be as the scientist who saves Murphy's life, turning him into the cyborg. It's now been announced that none other than Samuel L Jackson will also appear in the film as a 'charsimatic tv mogul' named Pat Novak. Jackson was, of course, most recently seen as Nick Fury in The Avengers and will appear in Tarantino's Django Unchained early next year.
Jose Padilha is assuming directorial duties and plans are to begin shooting in Toronto in September.
