Amazon: Is WW heading for the CW?

Written by (Editor) on 9th September 2012

With all the attention, it's a wonder that DC's Wonder Woman hasn't made it to screen. But 2013 will see another attempt...

Regular Impact Online readers will know that there have been various attempts to bring a live-action Wonder Woman to the masses - including ill-fated efforts by Joss Whedon himself. The only one of DC's top three characters not to have a juggernaut behind it (The Dark Knight trilogy has done well and Superman's getting another revamp for next year's summer tentpole, The Man of Steel) the Amazonian warrior princess most recently appeared on the edge of broadcast with a series from NBC, but after a pilot was filmed, it was decided - somewhat surprisingly - not to go ahead with a series. The script, from David E Kelley might well have been one factor, uneasily juggling the superhero aspects of the concept with a big business angle that would have felt more at home in some of Kelley's previous efforts (Ally McBeal, The Practise etc).

With talk of a possible Wonder Woman movie in development and one eye on the success of The Avengers, its S.H.I.E.L.D. televisual spin-off and the CW's forthcoming Arrow, it appears that the Powers That Be are noting the earnings-potential of superheroes in a big way and Wonder Woman may get her day in 2013.

The CW, Warner Brothers TV and DC Comics all appear to be working together to whip a new variation on the theme into shape, provisionally entitled 'Amazon'. Allan Heinberg (Grey’s Anatomy, Gilmore Girls) is said to be working on a totally new script. The writer has already had experience in the comics field with the Wonder Woman character and other titles such as Young Avengers and the JLA.

Few details of that script are known at this stage, but it appears that The CW will take the same approach to Amazon and the character as they have for Superman (in Smallville) and Green Arrow (in Arrow) and begin with an origin story that would be targetted at the teenage/young adult demographic.

As had already been proven, there's still a long way to go before Diana Prince and her alter ego make it to the screen, but there seems to be a determination to get her on screen in some way, shape or form as soon as possible...
