Wolfenstein: The New Order PS4 Review

13th June 2014

Wolfenstein: The New Order marks a solid return for the long running first person shooter franchise.

Wolfenstein: The New Order PS4 CoverFor over a decade the Wolfenstein First-person shooter games have entertained us with its violence and over the top guns and Bethesda Wolfenstein: The New Order does not disappoint, it re-ignites the series that created the First-person shooter genre.

The game takes place in World War 2 1946 and straight away you realise something is wrong as WW2 ended in 1945, you are thrown straight in to the fray as B.J Blazkowicz, an American hero, your mission- to take down the Nazi’s who are somehow armed with mysterious advanced technology and their unrelenting force has brought the most powerful nations to their knees.

As soon as the game starts you are en route to a Nazi research facility travelling in full force by air you are immediately attacked by the enemy and see a lot of your comrade’s fall before you, during this opening sequence you are charged with fixing your plane and shooting down the enemy until you have to jump from your plane, as it takes heavy damage, to another plane which also gets shot down. You then find yourself on a beach head separated from your unit who you then see being attacked by a giant mechanical dog, another one then appears and attacks you, but you make your escape in to the sea and get around the mechanical beasts to a gun big enough to take them down. You then meet your team properly two of which stand out, Fergus and Wyatt, who you communicate with often as you traverse the facility taking on the various enemies that get in your way.

It doesn’t take long for you to get your hands on some serious fire power, you end up with dual machine guns after the first few guard takedowns, and you also get to top up your armour by picking up helmets and pieces of armour that you come across, there are plenty more bizarre enemies lurking around for example there are armour wearing dogs and a giant three legged tank that stomps around causing all kinds of mayhem.

Wolfenstein: The New Order plays like any other First-person shooter game so the controls are easy to pick up, the only key difference I liked about the game was the perk system depending on how you play determines what perks level up, for example if you focus on accuracy and go for headshots you will gain better skills for those areas, all perks can be checked in the menu screen as well as collectibles scattered through all levels.

The only time that this game is a pain is when enemies called Commanders are present, as they carry a radio they can use to call re-enforcements if you are seen that will keep coming until the Commander is dead. They also usually travel around in pairs so being stealthy is your best bet! It can be done but it can get repetitive and annoying.

All in all Wolfenstein: The New Order is a solid First-person Shooter full of action and a gripping story a little repetitive but with plenty to keep you busy.

Review score: 8 out of 10
