NEW FOR '14: 'GOTHAM' - Then and Noir...

Written by (Editor) on 11th May 2014

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy... so 'Gotham' might yet be a great excuse to revisit the origins of the Dark Knight's city...

Gotham FOX seriesOver the next few weeks we'll be looking at some of the new shows to watch out for when the US networks kick-off their Autumn/Fall schedules. We start with perhaps the most anticpated new show of the batch - FOX's Gotham.

As we've noted previously, the series - now officially picked up - will detail the early career of James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) as he encounters people who will play a significant role in his future and that of his city. There's the likes of Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova), a adolescent cat-burglar, Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Taylor), Ivy Pepper (Clare Foley) Detective Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue), Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) and a newly orphaned boy named Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) and his new family guardian Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee). There'll also be new characters such as crime boss Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith).

Some have been worried that the show might go the 'yoof' route and turn into a 'Dark Knight High School' type of production, but the new trailer for the series (above) suggests something that - while mainstream and never in danger of cable/adult credentials - looks to be a tad darker and more crime-noir than the likes of Smallville and the forthcoming Flash or even the current hit Arrow

Danny Cannon (Judge Dredd, CSI) will direct the premiere and Bruno Heller will be the main writer on the show, helping steer proceedings -  pulling something of double-duty while also sticking with his just-renewed CBS show The Mentalist

We'll see what the series is like when it debuts around September, but we quite like this extended teaser trailer...
