Marvel and Netflix have made some major announcements about their projects at the NYCC. And believe it or not, ‘Ripley’ is involved…
While the San Diego Comic Convention was once the only major place to announce your multimedia comic-book plans, other events are rapidly becoming the platform for companies to announce their plans at other times of the year. The New York Comic Con has been taking place this weekend and there’s plenty to report in regard to the Netflix/Marvel projects.
Firstly we got a new and more detailed look at the Iron Fist television series which will be broadcast in 2017. As we’ve previously reported, Finn Jones takes the title role of Danny Rand who returns to New York after a lifetime (to date) of studying the martial arts and their mystical power (one wonders if eh crossed paths with Doctor Strange?). The power he know wields does always not sit comfortably with either himself or others who consider it blasphemous that a westerner should know such eastern secrets… but New York may need his abilities sooner than anyone realises.
There also comes news that The Defenders mini-series – which will tie together the stories of Matt Murdock / Daredevil Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Danny Rand / Iron Fist has cast its first major role outside the familiar heroes… and she will be played by none other than Sigourney Weaver. Despite much speculation – and seeming confirmation it will be a villainous role – there’s no official news on who Weaver will be playing, though there’s no doubt that casting such a high profile name and face is a statement that the Defenders is looking to make a major impact later in 2017.
