Huston departs 'The Crow' remake - what's next?

23rd June 2015

'The Crow' casts a long cinematic shadow. But with yet more problems for the contemporary remake, will a new Crow ever get off the ground?

The Crow remakeToday, the 1994 big-screen version of The Crow is remembered more for the untimely death of its star, Brandon Lee and the fledgling special-effects that placed him back in scenes he'd never had time to complete. In recent years there's been major talk of a revival of the franchise, but that talk hasn't translated into anything actually going before the camera. Various actors and directors have passed through the project, but news came through trade-paper Variety the last week that Boadwalk Empire's Jack Huston is the latest to depart, once again leaving the signature role open.

It's understood that scheduling issues were the main reason for Huston's departure - his upcomign projects include another remake - the classic Ben-Hur. The much-delayed Crow film was due to start filming this summer in Wales, under director Corin Hardy, but the start-date may have to be delayed if a replacement can't be found quickly.

“Jack Huston is unfortunately unavailable to continue with us on The Crow,” said director Corin Hardy in an official statement to the press. “ The Crow is an amazing project, and I am grateful that we have the time and patience to get it right. We look forward to unveiling our new lead and starting to film over the next several weeks.”

Previously the likes of Bradley Cooper were being courted to star but apparently actors in the frame now include the likes of Nicholas Hoult (X-Men, Mad Max: Fury Road).

Though the screen is positively wash with comic-related adaptations, we're still interested to see what a new production could bring to the screen. We're just not holding our breaths just yet.
