Abrams bunkers down for new ‘Cloverfield’…

A long-awaited sequel to Cloverfield. Wait. Long-awaited? Sequel? Cloverfield? What? ‘10 Cloverfield Lane‘ is set for an imminent release…

10 Cloverfield LaneLong before he rebooted the likes of Star Trek and Star Wars, J J Abrams produced a film called Cloverfield. It was a POV (point-of-view)/found-footage framed story of New York in the middle of an apocalypse as some sort of giant creature stomped its way through the skyscrapers and we were left to piece together the order of events, the real danger and the fates of those we saw along the way. It was a controversial film in a love-it/loathe-it way with people applauding the special-effects but wondering if the POV hook was hiding a fairly thin story that was high of effect but which didn’t engage us with its characters.

And so to 10 Cloverfield Lane, another film from Abrams’ Bad Robot company. It’s not actually clear if this is a companion-piece, a sequel or prequel though the makers describe it as a ‘blood relative’ of the original.  What we do see is John Goodman, John Gallagher Jr. and  Mary Elizabeth Winstead in what appears to be an underground bunker and in which Winstead’s character may be being held against her will. Goodman’s character seem intent on keeping her within, but when she seizes the opportunity to escape what will she find on the outside?

Originally lensed under the name The Cellar – possibly to hide its thematic connection – the film, barely on anyone’s radar until now, opens in the US on 11th March…

We’ve no idea if it will live up to its claustrophobic tone, but full-marks for the secrecy, played much better than the ‘stage-whispers’ of the original blockbuster…
