Stargate Universe drops from orbit

31st December 2010

Despite a largely strong critical response, if not huge audiences, America's SyFy channel has just announced that they are cancelling Stargate Universe

The show, which has gone into hiatus halfway through its second season, will return later in 2011 for its final ten episodes. The series was a darker take on the franchise than the previous series (SG1 and Atlantis) had been, often described as a cross between the premise of Star Trek: Voyager and the style of Battlestar Galactica.

The news comes hot on the heels of the cancellation of the Battlestar Galactica prequel Capria and may fuel criticism that SyFy is moving away from traditional sci-fi entertainment (their line-up now includes wrestling). However the channel would probably disagree and point to several upcoming 2011 projects including a further BSG spinoff (and back-door pilot) called Blood & Chrome and their re-imagining of the hit BBC show Being Human (beginning on January 17th.

British star Robert Carlyle (who plays the series' duplictious Doctor Nicholas Rush) recently won a Gemini Award (the Canadian version of the Emmys, currently in its twenty-fifth year) winning for Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role. The show itself received 9 total nominations.
