Book number three in the Sabina Kane series, Green-Eyed Demon continues the adventures of Sabina, her sidekick and minion Giguhl, and her love interest Adam Lazarus. The novel begins where The Mage in Black left off, with mage/vampire Sabina’s twin sister Maisie’s kidnapping.
Sabina and company enter the City of New Orleans in order to find Maisie. They encounter a voodoo priestess, drag queens, werewolves, mages, vampires, and various freaky humans on their search. The group follows up the leads they receive and their frustration builds. People close to Sabina begin to get hurt, and Sabina begins to shut down emotionally. She discovers that her grandmother is plotting her revenge, using Maisie as an unwitting accomplice. Will this be Sabina’s last encounter with Lavinia?
Wells gets fans involved in the story, and has a way with cliffhangers. I admit that I had difficulty waiting for this book; I needed resolution after the last novel. Her main character, Sabina, is a novelty in this type of novel. In each book, she has grown up a little. She has her flaws and her slip-ups, but she never falls quite as far back as the point at which she started. The time she takes to heal and become a better person is realistic. She struggles with her past and her life experiences as much as anyone does. This alone makes the series worth reading; the plot twists and the individual characters make it all the more compelling.
