The Awaited UK Release of Gods of Egypt

The star of the film “300”, Gerard Butler, is back with a new UK release blockbuster film, Gods of Egypt. Rumoured to be one of the most anti-climactic films of the summer, Gods of Egypt does appear to be jam packed full of blood pulsating action but can it change public perspective and live up to the hype when screened in the UK…?

The eagerly anticipated fantasy/action film holds a star-studded cast, featuring names such as Gerard Butler (set), Brendan Thwaites (Bek) and Elodie Young (Hathor) who has risen to fame recently playing Elektra from the new season of Daredevil. Filming took place in Australia, with the film gaining a $140 million (£100 million) budget.

Lionsgate released the film in theatres globally starting February 26th, receiving backlash from its prominently white cast, regarding which Lionsgate issued an apology for its ethical misrepresentation of Egyptians. The men behind the film, Alex Proyas and Basil Iwanyk, remain tight lipped about the negative remarks surrounding the film, however do insist that people give it a watch, to form their own opinions, and not be influenced by other critics of the film.

Mortal hero Bek teams with the god Horus in an alliance against set, the merciless god of darkness, who has usurped Egypt’s throne, plunging the once peaceful prosperous empire into conflict and turmoil. Bek, played by Brenton Thwaites, hopes to save the world and rescue his true love, and forms an alliance with the powerful god Horus, played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, famous for his part in Game of Thrones. Their battle against Set and his henchmen takes them into the afterlife and across heavens for an epic confrontation.

With the new UK launch set for June 17th, trailers are appearing on TV screens filled with Egyptian gods and goddesses – the film screams gladiator resemblance but may or may not fail in comparison.
