DTW: Blessed (Be) are the Geek...

More women than ever are happy to be identified as  'geeks'. But  is the 'Old Boys Club' still going strong...and even somewhat dangerous?

Dead to Rights Column 3I was honestly not aware of the issues faced by women who consider themselves geeks until I was made aware of a video that made its way to Upworthy. The title of the video is “Some Geek Boys Called These Geek Girls ‘Fake.’ They Certainly Won’t Be Making That Mistake Again.” The video is amazing and details some of the harassment that female geeks have endured. It also features some celebrities with messages of their own.

Personally, I come from a long line of geeks on my father’s side. My grandfather, who I never had the privilege to meet in person, invented a way to heat the family car in winter. (He had a third grade education by the way...)  As a one-year-old, I sat on my dad’s lap and watched Star Trek with him when it was a running series. While I obviously don’t remember the first run-through of the series, we watched the reruns. I learned a lot of life lessons from that show. Dad encouraged me to read science fiction as a kid. Andre Norton (who was a woman), H.G. Wells, and H.P. Lovecraft, just to name a few. Dad, somewhat to Mom’s chagrin, let me buy Spider-man and horror comics instead of Archie or Little Lulu. I was completely in love with Aquaman by the age of seven or eight. My first Doctor Who was the fourth. So I am taking this just a little personally...
