RIP: Pete Postlethwaite

12th January 2011

Pete Postlethwaite, arguably one of Britian's best character actors passed away on 2nd January. Steven Spielberg referred to him as the world's best actor...

Portrait shot of Pete PostlethwaitePete, despite talents that would eclipse many an A-Lister, was never quite the banner-name, mainstream star he deserved to be - but his weathered, delightfully caricatured face placed him where he was much more comfortable: in the role of favoured character actor and strong supporting role. Fellow cast-members would talk of their admiration for him and directors would praise his talents, but Postlethwaite never appeared to be in it for the red carpet and column inches. He’d attend a premiere but be much more happy to share a simple drink (or five) in a pub.

His expansive list of credits include The Usual Suspects, Jurassic Park, Romeo & Juliet, Dragonheart, In the Name of the Father, The Age of Stupid, Brassed Off, Among Giants, When Saturday Comes, Inception, Dark Water and the upcoming Killing Bono. Impact editor John Mosby met him a number of times and described him as '...a character actor, a character and a gentleman - a massive talent hidden in plain sight...' Pete was 64 and died peaceully after a typically stoic and dignified battle with cancer. A fuller profile of the actor is being prepared for an upcoming issue of Impact.
