‘Big Hero 6’ to spin-off into Disney series…

Big Hero 6 to be Disney series

Balalalala! It was the most charming superhero entry in the whole of the Marvel/Disney deal… and now feature film ‘Big Hero 6’ is about to continue its adventures on television…

When Big Hero 6 arrived in cinemas in late 2014 it won a very special place in our hearts. While technically being a product of the Marvel/Disney union (based in part on the creations of Steven T. Seagle and Duncan Rouleau)  it was a ‘superhero’ film like no other, a computer-animated outing that proved to be a funny, delightful and – frankly – awe-inspiring tale that meshed cartoon, cutting-edge animation and more importantly a real heart. It was the best animated outing since The Incredibles and  it went on to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

And now, it’s time to fist-bump once more… as Big Hero 6 is getting a series, carrying on from the end of the film and, once-again, aimed at a discerning all-ages audience. Baymax, the inflatable robot hero will be joined by the rest of the feature’s cast including Hiro, Wasabi, Honey Lemon, Fred, and GoGo Tomago as the team protect the city of San Fransokyo  from new threats.  It’s a production championed at Disney Television Animation by executive producers Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley, (who previously created and were showrunners for another hit Disney series Kim Possible.) Nick Filippi, who also worked on that show will be an executive producer and supervising director.Big Hero 6: The Series is already in production and the current timetable is aiming its debut for a 2017 debut.

It was announced as part of Disney‘s roll-out of upcoming projects and as part of Disney Channels Worldwide‘s Kids Upfront slate. As such it is one of seventeen new productions being planned. across various Disney channels.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to further develop these characters into a world-class animated series — full of fun, action and the kind of endearing storytelling that only Mark, Bob — and  Baymax — can deliver,” Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide said in a statement.

It isn’t known at this point what animation style will be involved. Given that the ‘look’ of the film was an important part of its success, we’re hoping that it follows the same CGI-style so that it genuinely feels part of the same universe. Here’s the original feature trailer…
