‘Jail Break’ could be the opportunity for Cambodia to enter the action cinema industry in the same way as some of its regional neighbours…
We’ve had Hong Kong action cinema, Japanese action cinema, Thai action cinema, and more recently Indonesian and Vietnamese action cinema… now its time to get ready for Cambodian action cinema to bust out… quite literally if that film is Jail Break.
Puprom Entertainment in association with Kongchak Pictures have got together for the action comedy adventure JAIL BREAK, which may well do to do for Cambodia what The Raid did for Indonesia! The premise: a unit of Special Task Force Officers are sent to Koh Kla prison, a building that holds the country’s top criminals. What starts as a simple escort mission gets thrown into chaos as the prisoners take over the prison and its surroundings. Now trapped within the prison walls, five cops must fight to survive until they can be rescued.
The film’s cast is headed Dara Our, star of Cambodia’s first action movie Hanuman as well as Father’s Treasure, Before the Fall and The Forest Whispers. His co-lead is the multi-talented Jean Paul Ly, whose action credits include stunt and fight work on everything from Lucy, Now You See Me 2, Grimsby, 24, Streetfighter and more recently Cuckoo.
The cast also includes…Tharoth Sam, the first female Bokator Fighter to make it into the MMA League and winner of the One FC MMA Tournament in 2014 (she can be seen in a supporting role in Angelina Jolie’s upcoming First They Killed My Father), Tara Vy, a veteran Bokator fighter who took 2nd place at the 2015 Bokator Championship (and served as Stunt Coordinator on Hanuman), Savin Phillip (who will also be seen in First They Killed My Father, as well as his memorable turn as the main villain in Hanuman). Sirivudh Sisowath also brings his intense cinematic presence to play in this film after strong turns in such projects as Sbek Kong. More cast announcements will be made as the film’s pre-production begins and the scheduled shoot begins this summer.
The film will be shot from a script by Michael Hodgson and directed by Jimmy Henderson, with Loy Te and Henderson serving as producers and Jean-Paul Ly serving as action director on the project. To get an idea of what have to look forward to, here’s a taste of JP in action.
