Most of us at Impact, REALLY loved the first 'Riddick' film Pitch Black.. While many Hollywood blockbusters go out of their way to make their anti-heroes redeemable, here was a film where the bad guy we started to root for was not a nice person. He was biding his time and determined only to get out of the predicament alive. We were tricked into thinking this was Rhona Mitra's movie, but by the time the credits rolled, the protaganist and antagonist turned out to Vin Diesel's nearly-blind fugitive.
The sequel, Chronicles of Riddick went in a compeltely different direction - an outing with delusions of being 'Dune' and which missed out a lot of what had made the original so appealling. This was a film so concerned with its production-design over its script, that even Thandie Newton couldn't save it.
A third Riddick outing was never a sure thing, but a third chapter, helpfully and simply entitled 'Riddick', is released in the late summer and the teaser trailer as sjust appeared on line courtesy of Machinima. Though it's another trailer that reveals far too much about the fate of some of its cast, at least this feels a LITTLE closer to the idea of Riddick facing a threat from without and within, with bounty-hunters determined to capture him and alien noctural creaturess determined to kill anything that moves in the darkness.
We'll wait to pass final judgement until we've seen the finished film, but with the likes of Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff also onboard this might be worth a shot in the dark...
