If the Cannes Film Festival announcement is true, Max Zhang, one of the villains of Ip Man 3, could be getting his own spin-off, working with Yuen Woo-ping…
Max Zhang (Zhang Jin) may have begun his film career as a stuntman – he was one of Zhang Zhiyi’s doubles on Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon – but the last few years have seen him making quite a name for himself as an action actor in his own right. He had a memorable role in Wong Kar-wai’s The Grandmaster, playing the fighter who takes on Zhang Zhiyi at the train station, got a solid supporting role in Roy Chow’s Rise of the Legend, nearly stole the show from Tony Jaa and Wu Jing in SPL 2: A Time of Crisis (otherwise known as Kill Zone 2 for American audiences). He also played Cheung Tin-chi, the rival Wing Chun nemesis rather than full-fledged villain, who finds himself forced to battle Donnie Yen’s legendary Master in Ip Man 3.
While he’s currently hard at work on the action thriller The Brink and is also slated to star in SPL 3: War Needs Lord, it was announced at the Cannes International Film Festival that he would be reprising his character in an Ip Man spin off to be directed by legendary choreographer Yuen Woo-ping. No word yet on a start-date or title as yet and we’re not sure about the Ip Man Unofficial title that some websites seem to be suggesting. Currently Yuen is also attached to both the Miracle Fighters remake with Tsui Hark, and Hand Over Fist.
