This week saw a rather unexpected addition to the Machete sequel drama, but this time the developments weren't in front of the camera. Overnight Productions is taking Rodriguez and his Quick Draw Holdings company to to court, claiming $2million and that the deal which allows the director to make a sequel to Machete has been compromised by misquoting of tax credits and the budget for the sequel.
"Although defendants have produced the sequel, they have failed to meet a condition precedent to their grant of rights, forcing plaintiffs to terminate the agreement," the complaint reads on documents submitted. " Defendants have also failed and refused to provide the required budget information to Overnight Productions so that it can determine the producer fee owed with respect to the sequel. As a result, plaintiffs have been forced to bring this action to confirm the cancellation of the grant of rights and to recover the amounts plaintiffs are owed."
The franchise, featuring Danny Trejo, has faced lawsuits in the past with Yvonne DeLaRosa instigating legal action against original director Ethan Maniquis in February, claiming he had sought and been provided ideas by her prior to the film.
The original film cost approximately $10million to make and raked in over $40million.
So far Rodriguez and his company have made no comment on the case.
