SDCC – Sherlocked and Loaded…

Sherlock at the SDCC

More San Diego ‘Cumberbatching’. As the ‘Sherlock’ panel takes place at the event, we get a glimpse of what the 2017 return of the super-sleuth might be offering…

On a technical level, the release of a for the 2017 season of Sherlock (though it’s hard to call the limited length of any Sherlock run as a ‘season’) was done by the BBC but it was done to coincide with the Sherlock panel taking place at the San Diego event. (At the mercy of and Steven Moffat, the production team apparently had to undergo their own Hunger Games to decide who  would attend with them…)

The show, run by Gatiss and Moffat, has been fairly divisive in recent years – being equally applauded for its wry wit and stylistic touches but criticised for sometimes relying on those flourishes over actual genuine clever deductive reasoning within its stories. Excluding the most recent seasonal outing – which saw Holmes and Watson in a mostly Victorian setting – we last left the deductive duo faced with the possible return of a pretty-much-dead Moriarty, though it wasn’t clear if this was the real deal or someone using his personality traits on a internet-level agenda.

the next run looks pretty large in scope – explosions, helicopters and apparently upping the personal stakes for all involved. It looks as if Toby could be a big bad for at least one story (possibly the second of the new run) playing a character we think is called Culverton Smith. , fresh from his Strange role for looks suitably bewildered and intrigued by the new game that’s a foot. Three keys words which traditionally become important later appear to be, in this case: ‘Thatcher‘, ‘Smith’ (presumably Toby’s character) and ‘Sherrinford‘.

Maybe they’re all the names of big bads?

Audiences will get to decide in early 2017…
