Those clued-up genre fans awaiting Guillermo del Toro's series 'The Strain' will appreciate the irony in some news about the casting of his new television show. (del Toro's series is based around a world where a viral outbreak has caused widespead problems and vampiric-like symptoms...)
In the originally shot pilot, John Hurt played Professor Abraham Setrakian, a Holocaust survivor running a pawn shop in Harlem and who helps the main hero Dr. Ephraim Goodweather ( House of Cards' Corey Stoll). However with the news that the filmed pilot will go to a series, Hurt has now been replaced by David Bradley. Well known for several major roles, Bradley has most recently been seen in this week's An Adventure in Space and Time in which he played William Hartnell, the actor who first played Doctor Who. Hurt, of course, is the recently 'discovered' Ninth incarnation of The Doctor who will have a pivotal role in the anniversary special.
The Strain, overseen by show-runner Carlton Cuse, is based on the books by del Toro and Chuck Hogan which were first published in 2009. FX will broadcast the television series adaptation in 2014 with thirteen initial episodes starting in July
