Well, after a week of unadulterated excitment, you'd think that the Doctor Who publicity machine would be taking a rest. After all, the screenings in America, just made it the second most profitable 'movie' of the night at the entire country's box-office, beaten only by the Hunger Games sequel. But nooooooooo. With the year's Christmas special (and Matt Smith's final outing) bowing on Christmas Day, we're now less than a month before that broadcast.
To underline that, the BBC have released a poster image for the special - now officially entitled The Time of the Doctor - featuring Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and a range of elements designed to spark your interest. What's that you say? Yes, yes... we know the man at the centre of the image is Matt Smith, but look very, very closely at the fire burning in the picture and you'll see a sneaky addition to the image - the outline of the face of the next Doctor (whether he be technically the twelfth or thirteenth, depending on how you number the regeneration energies nowadays). We thought for a second it might be a mistake, an errant piece of photoshopping perhaps, or the artist secretly slipping the image in, but it actually appears on both the portrait and the lanscape versions of the poster image (though in different placements - both times within one of the torch flames). The landscape version of this image has the Capaldi image close to Smith's left hand and also shows members of The Silence looking fearsome. That clocktower, frozen at the moment 'twelve' hits could be a little bit important as well...
"Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe’s deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars. And amongst them – the Doctor. Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe..."
Rumours abound of a much darker storyline than usual in the Christmas special and with Smith's departure as well as the trailer shown on Saturday (and accompanying our The Day of the Doctor review HERE) it does look like there'll be a ding-dong merrily on high on Trenzalore this festive season...
We'll be posting a raft of intriguing images from the special in early December...
