Will 'Creed' be Round Seven for 'Rocky'?

Rocky Balboa is one of Sylvester Stallone's iconic roles. 'Creed' looks set to spin-off from the franchise with Sly in a supporting role...

Rocky to return in 'Creed'Sylvester Stallone just can’t seem to hang up those boxing gloves. Though the original script for Rocky V would have seen Stallone’s character dying as a result of his injuries, that was changed and he lived to fight another day, including the very well received Rocky Balboa. Most recently we saw Stallone in a somewhat Rocky inspired turn as a boxer hoping to relive his former glories in Grudge Match opposite Raging Bull Robert De Niro... but it now looks like Stallone could be returning to the character of Rocky Balboa, although 'Creed' is a somewhat different angle on that mythology.

It is planned to tell the story around the grandson of Apollo Creed (originally played by Carl Weathers - most recently seen in episodes of Arrested Development), who follows in his grandfather’s footsteps when he learns he has the same natural gift and potential that made his grandfather a heavyweight champion.

In a recent interview while promoting Grudge Match, Stallone revealed that the plan was to begin filming for Creed  in early 2014,: “…No Rocky VII, I’m done with that series. However, I will take part in Creed, the Ryan Coogler film about the son of Apollo. We start shooting in February. But it really is a completely different film, it’s dramatic.

Director Ryan Coogler is perhaps best known for Fruitvale Station which won great acclaim at last year's Sundance Film Festival. If all goes well, Michael B Jordan looks set to play the grandson in Creed  with Stallone appearing as Rocky Balboa for the seventh time, in a supporting role.
