No House-Arrest for RoboCop Remake...

Written by (Editor) on 24th August 2012

There is no longer a RoboCop in the House...or perhaps that's the other way around... as Hugh Laurie departs the re-imagining...

Would you 'buy this for a dollar'? The revamped RoboCop has been getting some attention recently due to rumours of a script that has been making nostalgic fans wince at some of the apparently proposed plot-points.

Hitflix's Drew McWeeney (who was also a respected contributor to Aint it Cool News) claimed to have seen a leaked script which he apaprently thought was not that great (Or as he put it, in a tweet, was SO bad that: 'My nose started bleeding and I forgot my name...'  He claimed that the current script included a variety of RoboCop incarnations evolving throughout the movie, starting with a suit that seems designed to ridicule the original, that the suit is 'outsourced' to China to build and  after being sent to fight Al Queda in Iraq, the character begins to look like a '...cop on steroids painted metallic blue...'

While one can always anticpate big changes from script to screen, some of those ideas do seem a little 'out there', especially for a concept built somewhat on the nostalgia of the culture-tweaking original...

The latest bad news is that House star Hugh Laurie, who was reported to be onboard - possibly to play the head of the corporation 'OmniCorp' that RoboCop finds himself pitted against (a role parallel to the Dick Jones role played by Ronny Cox in the original) - is now no longer involved. No reason has been given for Laurie leaving the project and there remains some confusion as to whether he was ever 'officially' signed up or merely in negotiations (though his involvement was trumpeted several months ago). It seems the studio is looking around for replacements... industry site Deadline says Clive Owen is one name being considered...

At the moment the ensemble cast for the film still looks pretty strong - including Samuel L Jackson, Gary Oldman, Jennifer Ehle, Jackie Earle Haley and Abbie Cornish - with Joel Kinnaman as the title character/Alex Murphy.  The film is currently due to be released in August 2013.
