Terminator 2 to Return to Cinemas in 3D

He said he’d be back and now he is…Arnold Schwarzenegger’s infamous and renowned sci-fi film ‘The 2: Judgment Day‘ will be returning next year… after being remastered for a special release…

The news of the release was revealed in a recent post on the film’s Facebook page, but an official release date is yet to be fully confirmed. The 3D remaster and re-release had originally been planned for release this year to coincide with the film’s 25th anniversary, but it will now be released in 2017. There has been no explanation for the delay and very few details revealed about what else we can expect from the release.

In a nice piece of sci-fi serendipity, the news was announced on the same date as the humanity-annihilating AI Skynet first came online: “August 29th 1997: the day Skynet first became self-aware. August 29th 2016: the day you first saw the brand new poster for Terminator 2 in 3D. Originally released in 1991, the film saw the return of T-800 Terminator, famously played by Arnold Schwarzenegger… this time to protect the human race from the deadly and sinister T-1000 (Robert Patrick – now one of the stars of tv’s Scorpion show) . The film was awarded several BAFTAs and for its special effects.

The original film has been converted into 3D by Cameron, DMG Entertainment and StudioCanal and has been created using StereoD post-production technology. Converting a film to 3D after production can be a challenge for producers, as they have to go back and use post-production 3D conversion, as opposed to filming using 3D cameras to begin with.

The 3D release of Terminator 2: Judgement Day will also be the film’s first official cinema release in . China-based DMG are hoping the film will follow the popularity of Terminator: Genisys, which was released last year, grossing $112.8 million in the country. After largely being criticised by most critics (you can read Impact’s original here) the film only made $89.7m in the US, but the international box-office arguably shows the potential for a large franchise audience base in the .
